Freelance journalist Aly Laube wrote an article investigating the conditions within the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) jail as experienced by those protesters arrested on the viaduct in June during global Black Lives Matter protest. The viaduct is a site that formerly destroyed and displaced the once black neighbourhood of Vancouver, Hogan's Alley.

Those arrested say that condition within Vancouver's jail were dismal, especially in light of the COVID-19. Guards were not universally wearing masks and prisoners were unable to get hand sanitizers or masks or flush toilets. Bodily fluids were in the cells and on the walls unclean from previous prisoners.
