A blessing ceremony was held on property in the Kootenay/McKay Street area of Prince Rupert in late August where the future Harbour View Townhouses will be built.

North Coast MLA Jennifer Rice, Prince Rupert Mayor Herb Pond and members of the Gitxaala First Nation and guests took part in the event.

Brenna Innes, president of the Prince Rupert Indigenous Housing Society, spoke with CFNR about the upcoming project.

The land is set to be developed for more housing for the Prince Rupert area. Once the work is finished, in approximately 18 months, the Gitxaala Nation will have twenty units of townhouse housing. The units range from two to four bedrooms a place for the nation's members in Prince Rupert.

Funding for the housing project is from the province through BC Housing and the federal government, which have invested a combined total of $16 million dollars towards the project, and is part of an initiative for Prince Rupert Indigenous Housing Society.

Ground breaking for the project will be sometime this week although the exact date was unknown to Innes.
