This Friday, March 19, Sackville’s students are planning to draw attention to the global climate crisis, as they join their counterparts around the world in another Global Climate Strike.
On the Mount Allison campus, student group Divest MtA is organizing a climate strike action at 1pm in front of the Centennial Building, near the Chapel. A schedule released by Divest MTA says there will be speeches at Centennial Hall, and then a march to the home of university president Jean-Paul Boudreau.
Divest MtA also announced on social media this week that they are ramping up their demands when it comes to the steps they want to see Mount Allison take. After seven years of calling for divestment from the top 200 publicly traded fossil fuel companies, the group is now calling for complete fossil fuel divestment.
“Incremental action is over,” says Tessa Carroll, a Divest MTA member speaking in an Instagram video earlier this week. “Stop wasting time on non-solutions and commit to sustainable investment now. If you agree, please join us on March 19 at Centennial Hall at 1pm.”
This Friday’s Global Climate Strike was called back in January by FridaysForFuture, the international movement which started when Greta Thunberg began her first school strike for climate in August 2018.
One of the Canadian groups involved in FridaysForFuture is Climate Strike Canada, and they are hosting a livestream event on Friday starting at 6pm. The group says the event will feature grassroots groups and frontline activists talking about the future of climate justice.
