On October 17th 2020 the town of Smithers in Northern BC held a municipal by-election which resulted in interim mayor Gladys Atrill winning the seat as Mayor by a landslide 75% voter decision and newcomer to council Mika Meyer receiving most votes by 9% over second place Colin Bateman.

Mika Meyer said her first order will be to install the Pride rainbow sidewalk which have been much contested by Pro-Life / Anti LGBTQ2+ communities in Smithers.

Gladys Atrill said she is moving ahead with council's plans for 2020 and 2021 activities as well as progressing the town's library / community centre build.
