On May 1, the Gitxaala Enterprises Corporation (GECO) announced their acquisition of the Crest Hotel in Prince Rupert.

Starting out as the 44 unit "Crest Motor Hotel" in 1961, the Crest has grown to now feature 107 rooms, a lounge, a restaurant, and employs close to 100 people.

Tina Smith, previous owner and daughter of the original owners' Bill and Gwen Murray, said in a news release that they are excited about the transition of ownership to GECO and are confident that the level of service at the Crest will continue.

CEO and President of GECO, Michael Uehara says that the change of ownership will not result in any operational changes, and they will continue to work with the previous owner Steve Smith and Scott Farwell to ensure a smooth transition.

But Uehara added that guest perception of the hotel may change to hold more pride in lodging in a First Nation owned business. According to Uehara, the acquisition has been in the works for the past year and a half. Though no exact amount regarding cost has been given, Uehara says that the price was just right.

“I would say it’s an investment, not a cost,” Chief Councillor of the Gitxaala Nation Linda Innes said.

The nation’s ultimate goal is to be an active participant in the economy and to create multi-generational wealth, Innes added.

Both Uehara and Innes said that the Crest was an ideal acquisition due to it’s position on both the nation’s territory and within Prince Rupert’s reputation.
