Sensing a need by Cortes Islanders for help with technology, Clio Forsyth Morrissette discovered that other islanders had the same vision. She wondered how to provide help to as many people as possible, seeking help with their devices and Internet use, without costing them anything?
Folk University, a Cortes Island community resource and information network, with a weekly program on CKTZ Cortes community radio, helped to organize funding to cover costs, and weekly drop-in tech help sessions were launched early this spring.
After a couple of months of operating, Forsyth Morrissette says her clients have tended to be people in the 50-70 year age range. The two-hour sessions are busy and she provides anywhere from 15 minutes to half hour consultations.
She says that most of her time is spent providing emotional support to help guide people so they can navigate and use their devices, or browse the internet without anxiety, rather than solving hardware or software issues.
