The Cobourg Cougars junior A hockey club have a new head coach and general manager heading into the Ontario Junior Hockey League season after Peter Drikos was named an assistant coach with the ECHL’s Rapid City Rush.

Connor Armour, who was entering his second season as an assistant coach, was promoted to head coach. Armour is a former Cougars captain who played for the club from 2010 to 2015 before a four-year NCAA stint at Adrian College.

Joining Armour on the bench is returning assistant coach Tom Foster and new coach Mark MacAuley, another Cougars alumni member and former teammate of Armour.

Drikos also held the position of general manager. Adam Holzmann, who was assistant GM and director of scouting, now assumes the GM position.

The Cougars opened their OJHL pre-season schedule on the road Friday night with a 7-5 loss to the Lindsay Muskies, but answered back with a 6-1 victory Monday night when the teams met again in Cobourg.

Wednesday night, the Cougars earned a 6-4 win over the visiting Wellington Dukes at the Cobourg Community Centre. The Cougars and Dukes will square off again Friday in Wellington at 7:30.

Cobourg opens the OJHL regular season Friday, Sept. 8 in Trenton against the Golden Hawks. Their home opener is Monday, Sept. 11 against the St. Michael’s Buzzers. Game time is 7 p.m. at the CCC.
