Equine guided learning has a home on Cortes Island helping people heal from trauma, stress

For years, White Horse Sanctuary has helped locals heal through its equine guided learning sessions.

Facilitator Oriane Lee Johnston calls her offerings "horse spirit medicine." The official description is "equine guided learning," which is represented by an organization across Canada.

Johnston became fascinated with the practice when she considered a career change. Now having been involved with the work for two decades, Johnston has taught and guided sessions from Cortes Island to East Africa. Her current offerings are described on the White Horse Sanctuary website. She says sessions can provide life changing experiences for participants, including helping to heal from trauma, reducing stress and anxiety, as well as working with people who have special needs.

Johnston originally set up her own private practice with two draft horses named Omar and Raven. They have now moved on to a property elsewhere in BC, but Johnston continues her work with the help of a neighbor at Mystic Moon Stable.
