Six Nations Elected Council (SNEC) have given the greenlight to have 11 electric car chargers installed in Six Nations to help the community meet Canada's 2030 emissions reduction plan.
Six Nations Public Works Department brought the recommendation to council during the Oct. 16 General Finance meeting. The say an initial $99,000 has been funded for the project through the Indigenous Clean Energy Charge Up program; Public Works say an additional $100,000 is needed from SNEC to complete the project.
The project will see ten level 2 charging stations, and one level 3 station installed in the community. The level 2 stations are said to charge an electric vehicle's battery overnight; alternatively, the level 3 charger is considered a "fast charger" and can charge a battery in 30 minutes.
Six Nations Public Works Community Energy Champion Crystal Campbell says the locations for the chargers have not been determined but gave some possible locations that Six Nations community members could find them.
"As of right now, the level 2 chargers, we're still up in the air right now as to where we're going actually to put them. I was thinking at the Parks and Rec department," she said.
"But the level 3 fast charger I'd like to put at the Iroquois Plaza."
SNEC granted a post approval for Six Nations Public Works to move forward on this project. Crystal Campbell says her team will be notifying the community and council when the locations for the chargers have been determined.
