Six Nations Elected Council (SNEC) approved the contract for an additional duplex to be built on Moccasin Trail in Ohsweken. The size of the lot allows for two duplexes to share the land.
Lily-Anne Mt. Pleasant, Acting Director & Financial Control Officer for Six Nations Housing, confirmed in statement to CJKS that while the lot is extremely large, it does have a drop off at the back and only the portion between the existing houses by the road is usable space: the rest is protected forest.
Mt. Pleasant also spoke on the project during the SNEC general finance meeting on Dec. 7.
"Council had already approved a contract for $400,000 for a single duplex on that particular lot. In order to maximize land space we decided to put two duplexes on the single lot, given that it has the space to accommodate it. So we're just asking for approval for the additional amount to build the second duplex and perform site servicing."
In the statement to CJKS, Mt. pleasant added that Six Nations is trying to "maximize" the space.
"We’re trying to maximize land space, as we all know there isn’t sufficient land on current Six Nations territory to house the entirety of our membership."
Mt. Pleasant said that the first duplex was approved in August and then at that time the utilities tract were laid for both buildings.
SNEC approved the contract for $850,000 for the additional work.
