Advocates and supporters of rights for disabled individuals gathered at Queen’s Park this week. They are demanding for the expansion of the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) - this includes an increase of the monthly benefit and wider access for affordable housing.

The current monthly benefit is at $1169, and Anthony Frisina of the Ontario Disability Coalition said that amount is unsustainable. He said for several disabled individuals, the benefit is their only source of income. The hope is to increase the monthly amount to at least $2000, comparable to the CERB (Canadian Emergency Response Benefit) amount during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in Canada.

Further, he said rent prices in the city continue to climb, and those with disabilities deserve homes that are affordable and comfortable. He would like to see more access to Ontario's housing benefit

CJRU had the opportunity to speak with Frisina following the press conference. He is hoping his message will reach the ears of more politicians and have a more substantial part in party platforms.

He would like voters to remember that individuals with disabilities deserve respect and the chance to have their voices heard.

The Ontario Disabiltiy Coalition, as well as other organizations like the Shelter and Housing Justice Network are expected to be present for future rallies at Queen’s Park and Nathan Philip square on affordable housing in the coming weeks.
