Six Nations is facing a deadline next month to apply for the First Nations Drinking Water Settlement, a country-wide class action lawsuit.
Rod Whitlow, Environmental Lead at Lands and Resources, gave the update on Monday at the Six Nations Elected Council Political Liaison meeting on Facebook.
Whitlow said that that since 2012, he has been working on the water security portfolio to seek and pursue water security for Six Nations.
Over the last decade, he has been in touch with various players, entities and parties including participating with the Chiefs of Ontario and Assembly of First Nations environment committees on the class action for First Nations drinking water.
Whitlow explained that the class action lawsuit has been established and went in to great detail about the different categories and possible ways this could impact both the community of Six Nations, as well as individual families on the territory, for the possibility of applying for compensation.
However, he also explained that there is a looming deadline in early December that council needs to submit to is they intend to apply at the community level.
The deadline for council to apply is Dec. 3 but individuals can also apply independently and successful applicants can receive up to $2,000 per year for each year they can prove they meet the requirements of the settlement.
For more details, the entire presentation has been posted on the Six Nations Elected Council Facebook page.
