Prince Edward County purchased a former school this week that it plans to use for affordable housing.

On Tuesday, council agreed to execute the conditional purchase of the former Queen Elizabeth School for $1,375,000 from the Hastings & Prince Edward District School Board. Prince Edward Lennox-Addington Social Services (PELASS), in partnership with the county, plan to build affordable and attainable housing, as well as childcare and medical facilities on the 4.59 acre site.

Council also directed county staff to proceed with an application to Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) for funding through their Housing Accelerator Fund (which is aimed at helping local governments increase housing supply) and their Co-Investment Funding program (which allows for organizations partnered with a government to apply for housing funding).

During past meetings, Charles Dowdall, executive director of housing for the county, stated that there is a high likelihood of CMHC funding being approved.
