Six Nations Elected Council (SNEC) says an update on the potential new Addictions Treatment Centre will be coming in the next weeks.
During council's Aug. 24 Annual General Assembly, SNEC CEO Darrin Jamieson had announced that council and its executive team had set aside $7.1 Million for the treatment facility to be constructed. Coun. Melba Thomas wondered where the project now currently stands and stressed the importance of addressing mental health and addictions in the community.
"As we know that's another need that we have in the community. We're talking about saving people's lives."
Coun. Audrey Powless Bomberry says that those community members struggling with mental health and addiction issues deserve support and that she would like to see the community as a whole address this issue together.
"They are a victim of their condition and they also deserve wrap-around services, they deserve to be treated with dignity and not shunned," she said.
"That's what I would like to recommend to this whole reserve, to work together for all of our members who are in need."
Coun. Helen Millen says the community does currently have a treatment center in Native Horizons Treatment Centre but, due to the organization's intake policy, some individuals may not have access until they go through the intake process. She says that Six Nations needs a rehab facility for those struggling with additiction to access as a transition space before then going to the treatment center.
"We do have a treatment center, the problem is that the Native Horizons' program requires people to be clean, I think it's either 4 weeks or 6 weeks before they can go into the program," she said.
"We need a rehab center, because the people can go into the rehab center and get clean and everything before they go in to get treatment," she added.
SNEC's finance team will now provide an update on where the $7.1 Million project currently stands.
