The issue of at-large cattle on Salem Road reared its head again on Tuesday at the Prince Edward County council meeting.

Council, last April and May, had previously examined the issue of whether to bring in additional by-laws (under the provincial Pounds Act) to remedy the problem of escaping cattle, from a nearby farm, onto the road.

Ameliasburgh Coun. Roy Pennell proposed the resolution for appointing a municipal pound keeper. However, council was unsupportive, with the resolution only gaining two votes.

Before the vote, Pennell warned, “if it’s your neighbour that gets killed, or my neighbor, and we do not act, after it has been before this council a second time…then we all get blamed.”

Bloomfield/Hallowell Coun. Phil Prinzen, in response, stated “as farmers we are actually liable for the safekeeping and the wellbeing of our animals, and we carry insurance for that.”
