A unanimous vote by the attendees of the Cortes Natural Food Co-op's general meeting approved several changes to the organization's by-laws on Tues, Mar. 15.

The changes included:

  • allowing a board member to reapply for election after serving 6 consecutive years
  • acknowledging that the Co-op is a members' co-op and does not require 50 percent of directors to be employees
  • requiring 10 (instead of 5) member signatures to appeal a board decision

The first point was the most significant and generated discussion around how to best reword the update.

Current Chair of the Board Amy Robertson said that for one, there are many organizations on the island competing for board members. Additionally, once a director is well versed in the workings of the Co-op, it is to everyone’s advantage to have a dedicated person continue in their position.

The Co-op’s new General Manager Mary Lavelle expressed relief that there would be less turnover of senior board members at the upcoming AGM in June. There is hope that the AGM can happen in person.
