The Six Nations community will be expanding one of the community's water main systems at Cayuga Road between 3rd Line Road and 4th Line Road.
The announcement was made during the April 24 political liaison meeting for Six Nations Elected Council (SNEC).
The expansion project will take place later this summer. The project was initially a part of the 2019 Six Nations Community Plan and was developed to help work towards enhancing water treatment capacity within the community and to help serve more community members within Six Nations.
Six Nations Director of Public Works Michael Montour stated that the project was publicly tendered and they are now seeking approval from SNEC to award the contract for the project to Avertex Utilities in the amount of $1,778,792.40. SNEC approved the contract for the project during the April 24 meeting.
Montour detailed the work that will take place, saying that the next phase of the project will be the third location to be addressed in the Six Nations community as part of the water main expansion strategy.
"We applied for $1.6 million to extend the water main on Cayuga Road between 3rd and 4th line Road," he said. "So, the first two priorities have been completed, that's Tuscarora and Onondaga Road both between 4th and 5th Line, and now we are on this [project]. This is our third priority: Cayuga Road between 3rd and 4th."
Montour stated that there is a shortfall in funds for the project, but Six Nations Public Works does have contingency plans in place to offset the outstanding amount.
