The annual Feed the Meter campaign to support Food for Learning initiatives through to 2026 was unanimously approved on Thursday by the Committee of the Whole.

The campaign, which also runs Trenton and Belleville, usually consists of all downtown Picton municipal parking fees being donated to Food for Learning for the month of December.

At the council meeting, Vicky Struthers from the Hastings and Prince Edward Learning Foundation shared an impassioned personal story about the importance of meal programs in schools. Struthers described it as "the one thing I had that was constant during that chaotic time in my life was breakfast club...I got to go to school and have a warm meal."

2023 will be the 15th anniversary of the Feed the Meter campaign, which has so far supported Food for Learning in seven local schools.

The campaign will run for the month of December in downtown Picton. Last year, it raised nearly $5,000 which contributed to Food for Learning’s overall 95,576 meals and snacks served to students in total.
