A suspect charged with a violence offence allegedly committed another crime the same day he was released by the courts with conditions.
That has left Cobourg Police Chief Paul VandeGraaf frustrated.
On Thursday, Daniel Tyler Foden was arrested and charged with robbery with violence, uttering threats to cause death and assaulting a police officer. He was held for a bail hearing.
The accused was released on Friday with conditions, including but not limited to, not being in the Town of Cobourg and to obey a curfew each night from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Later in the day Friday, Foden was arrested for mischief after damaging property at a construction site in the north end of town. He was charged with mischief, two counts of failing to comply with a court Order and was held for another bail hearing.
Chief VandeGraaf issued a release Saturday venting his frustrations regarding the court system and the ease of suspects getting bail despite allegedly committing violent offences, stating that the situation was “totally unacceptable at so many levels."
"This individual was arrested for violent offences committed in a specific neighbourhood in our community that is currently experiencing increased crime and victimization. This individual assaulted and robbed a member of our community and then the police officer investigating that matter," the release stated. "The decision of this court failed to support our community by allowing this person back into the community with no regard for the impact on the community, the victims, or the police."
VandeGraaf added that not one day passed before the accused re-offended in the community, adding “this is aggravating the level of frustration in our community with a system that does not meet our collective expectations.”
VandeGraaf spoke with CFWN further about the situation and his statement.
