Several Six Nations councillors are raising their concerns about the sale of cannabis products and safe use in the community.
Cathy Mair, chief commissioner of the Six Nations Cannabis Commission, gave an update at the Six Nations Elected Council's political liaison meeting Monday.
During her presentation, Mair explained that the commission was still in the process of getting set up and a phone line would soon be installed for the public to contact the commission. She added that the commission is in need of two additional commissioners.
The Six Nations Cannabis Commission was incorporated on June 6, 2021 and established to create a legal cannabis regulatory regime that supports community owned and operated cannabis businesses within the Six Nations Territory.
In the question period following Mair's update, it was repeatedly mentioned by councillors and Chief Mark Hill that the commission had it’s hands full in trying to deal with cannabis in the community.
Newly elected Coun. Greg Frazer referred to the situation on Six Nations with cannabis as a “run away train” alluding to the fact that there are cannabis shops now operating unregulated in the territory due to not having a fully established commission in place.
He asked Mair about cannabis products being sold on the territory and specifically pointed out "Space Drops," which is labelled as prescription only. Coun. Hazel Johnson also voiced her concerns over non-tested products being sold in the community, which prompted Mair to agree that there are many non-tested products being sold on Six Nations.
