The Port of Prince Rupert has partnered with the province in an effort to become Canada’s greenest port.

Through the new Integrated Marketplace Initiative, the port will be able to access domestic, innovative equipment and technology in an effort to reduce emissions and optimize operations.

CEO of the Prince Rupert Port Authority Shaun Stevenson said that one area of focus will be working with their biggest trucking partner Gat Leedm.

“It is going to be the focus of a lot of the innovation we’re looking at around decarbonization and testing out electric trucks and looking at alternate fuel sources.”, Stevenson said of the solely indigenous-owned business.

“The Integrated Marketplace is built upon collaboration but its major principle is inclusivity as well as green growth, and we’re very very pleased that we’ve been working with Gat Leedm from the very beginning.” Gerri Sinclair, BC innovation commissioner said.

Other key focus points within the initiative include data and processing improvements to support supply chain capacity, telematics and digitization of the port, improving port design and infrastructure, and reducing emissions from idling vehicles and equipment.

First announced in December 2022, Vancouver International Airport is the only other partner under the initiative so far, which works with an $11.5 million investment from the province.
