Bath and District Lions Club received honours two years in a row at national and international Lions Club conventions.
Last year in Cobourg, the Bath club was recognized for creating and hosting the first ever Walk About Town. This year, they were chosen at an international convention in Chicago to receive a Service Excellence award for all the work they did in 2022-2023.
The Walk About Town started as a way to get more foot traffic into local businesses during the pandemic, all the while raising funds for the Bath and District Lions Club to put towards a local non-profit. The increased community involvement proved to be impactful on local businesses, as well as the non-profit the club chose to support. Community members also were engaged, with over 200 participants taking part. Other clubs within Ontario have been adopting their own Walk About Town as well.
This year, Bath was recognized at an ever higher level at the international convention in Chicago. Every year, Lions Clubs from around the world gather in one place to celebrate the overall past, present and future of the service they provide. With hundreds of clubs, and over a million members, they make a point of recognizing the outstanding work done by specific clubs with a Service Excellence Award. Bath and District Lions Club was recognized this year and sent a Service Excellence award.
Bath and District Lions Club President Fred Brown said it's special to be noticed on such a high level.
"You can earn a Club Excellence by doing everything that they've checked off, but it's pretty rare," said Brown.
Now in its second year, the Walk About Town was in full swing in Bath on Saturday, May 13. The club was raising funds for the Bath Museum.
