Arthur proposed development met with optimism from council

A proposed development in Arthur was greeted with a warm welcome from council when presented at a public meeting earlier this week.

Developer GSP group were presented a residential community containing 51 single detached dwellings, 12 townhouse units, and accessory uses. Chair Steve McCabe was pleased with the range of activities that are proposed to be included for residents.

"I like the idea of all the shuffleboard, pickleball courts as well and some storage for trailers, which is just another added feature," McCabe said.

"I really like this idea and I'm looking forward to seeing more detailed plans on it," he added.

Coun. Sherry Burke was the sole person to raise any concern, asking the developer about the likelihood of requests for future minor variances. Still, Burke was pleased with the presented proposal.

The community at 210 Gordon St. in Arthur would include a stormwater management pond, solar panels, and other amenities if approved. McCabe also stated he was a fan of the inclusivity aspect of the community, and its availability to all home buyers.

"I think it's a neat option, for a lot of people, whether they're older adults or maybe just getting into housing," McCabe stated.

"I like how everything is planned together, how it's got the agri-hood feel to it, and the barn for community meetings, the community garden. The community garden in Mount Forest is fantastic," he added.

Coun. Penny Renken was happy with the amount of vegetation to liven up the neighbourhood.

"I like the idea of the amount of greenery that you have- the green space and the garden, and also the amount of trees that are going to be planted," Renken stated.

"I think it's a great concept and as well, without being pushed together, people do have a better opportunity to own their own home," she concluded.

The currently vacant site proposed for the development is just over nine hectares in area.

A final report and and bylaw will be presented to council for consideration at a future meeting.
