The Strathcona Regional District is launching its active transportation research project this week, beginning with a public survey.  The SRD was granted $20,000 last year toward the project for Cortes Island (previously reported) from the Union of BC Municipalities.

Leading the study for the SRD is Meredith Starkey, Manager of Planning and Parks.

Starkey is expecting the project will involve the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTI) to identify barriers for cyclists and pedestrians on the island's roads. She said the research may also involve identifying trail or route connections and supporting more e-bike charging stations on Cortes Island.

In a previous interview on rural road safety, Steve Earle explained how similar research done on Gabriola Island 10 years ago did result in road improvements for cyclists and pedestrians.

Reach the online public survey here: www.srd.ca/cortes-active-transportation-planning.

This survey is open to all Cortes community members from April 8th to May 1st. Read more about the study here.
