The Vallican Whole Community Centre is celebrating its 50th birthday

Archie Bunker and All in The Family topped the TV ratings, 12,000 anti-war protestors were arrested in May Day protests on Washington’s Capitol Hill. Greenpeace was just being founded on the BC Coast, the City of Vancouver was neck deep in a legal battle with the fledgling Georgia Straight, and WAC Bennett was the premier of British Columbia. The year was 1971.

Folks in what must have been an absolutely idyllic corner of interior BC set about to open a rural community centre in the heart of the Slocan Valley, to host events and build community. And that’s what it's done, and then some, since.

The Vallican Whole is celebrating its 50 anniversary this year. Administrator Marya Solinsbee provided Nelson’s Kootenay Co-op Radio with a flashback or two, and a glimpse into The Whole’s future.
