Ontario teachers denounce PC education cuts, endorse NDPs in upcoming election

The Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation (OSSTF) announced on Monday that it will fully endorse all Toronto and GTA (Greater Toronto Area) NDP candidates in the lead up to the Ontario election on June 2.

The federation cites their disapproval of Premier Doug Ford’s cuts and changes to Ontario education system. Since 2018 and well into the COVID-19 pandemic,  the federation said the PCS have cut $1.3 billion in funding,  increased class sizes and were unwilling to find earlier solutions to remote schooling for high school students. 

As part of the endorsements, NDP candidates were invited to speak at these press conferences. Toronto Centre's NDP candidate Kristyn Wong-Tam was unable to attend.

Due to the effects of the pandemic on both the quality of education and its infrastructure, the federation said that the education system needs an overhaul. This includes additional resources required to invest in more teaching staff and help reduce class sizes. 

The federation stated on their Facebook page that education continues to be ignored by the PC platform, and they hope to find concrete solutions as students and teachers adjust to in-person learning once more.
