British Columbia's Fraser Valley is home to one of the largest Ukrainian-Canadian diasporas.
Ron Dart, associate professor of political science at University of Fraser Valley (UFV), spoke with CIVL on the migration of many Russians and other Eastern European groups to the Fraser Valley. Dart discussed one reason Russians in particular have migrated to the Fraser Valley—they want to live somewhere where they are not forced to serve in the military. Similarly, much of the Fraser Valley's Mennonite community settled in the region after experiencing barriers to their religious freedoms, and other poor treatment in the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR).
