A land partnership is putting forth a model for home ownership on Cortes Island.
At Treedom, 80-acres of forested property, individuals and families live and share the land and associated costs. They also adhere to agreed upon values of land conservation and forest protection.
A recent successful rezoning application paves the way for Treedom to expand the number of homes on the acreage from five to eight.
The British Columbia Real Estate Association’s October report says the cost of housing in the province continues an upward trajectory, accompanied by a severe lack of inventory.
The local partnership hopes its land model can help inspire other communities looking for options to address the tight housing market. Another hope is that the Treedom community will grow, with more young families moving in in future.
