The Cortes Community Economic Development Association (CCEDA) continues its multi-pronged public engagement process in regards to the parcel of land with the working title “Village Commons,” on southern Cortes Island, BC.

The 2.5 acres of commercially zoned land adjacent to Manson’s Hall have a history of public consultation stretching back to 2004, says CCEDA’s website. The organization’s “smorgasbord of engagement offeringsthat started last month is a mix of in-person and at-home opportunities for community members to bring ideas to the proverbial table, with an eye to finalize a business plan by early 2022.

Cortes residents have these opportunities to weigh in:

  • an in-person workshop this Sunday, Nov. 14 has an updated time of 3-6pm at Manson’s Hall. Folks no longer need to pre-register, and the event is open to 40 participants. Bring footwear appropriate to walk the land and a mask for the indoor portion.
  • engage via this online idea-gathering forum
  • sounding boards, which are large posters with room to scribble, are currently at
    • the Manson’s Hall post office
    • Cortes Market
    • Squirrel Cove General Store
    • the waiting room at the Whaletown ferry terminal

Project manager Kate Maddigan and landscape architect Dave Snider spoke to CKTZ News about the public consultation process, past and present, and what attendees can expect at Sunday’s workshop.
