As vice president and director of outreach and communications of the UNBC BC Young Liberals (BCYL), Mark Dhillon strongly believes that youth voices play an important role in politics.

“What we are doing is representing youth interests and working with our politicians.” Dhillon explains the club’s goal, “we are a group that started in 1991 to represent youth politics and liberal ideology in BC.” The club is also present at other universities across BC. 

The UNBC strike and COVID-19 pandemic have given the group a slow start, but as Dhillon adds, the hope is to “build a [greater] presence on campus.” He hopes to be able to expand the club in the next coming months in order to begin the next academic year on a strong note. 

“What we are doing here isn't as big or as glorious...but what we are doing is representing youth interests and working with politicians so that when we as a generation have more power… and when these parties are trying to get our votes we will actually know how to converse in a political matter and bring forward our interests”, explains Dhillon about the advantage that the club brings to those that get involved. 

Dhillon expresses, “a lot of people say that politics is an old white man’s game…you see a lot of politicians and think…maybe they are right.” However, Dhilllon believes that opportunities, like the UNBC BCYL club, offer youth from all backgrounds the chance to change that narrative.
