The Town of Cowansville is introducing financial assistance for feminine hygiene products.
Cowansville is the first town in the Eastern Townships, and one of the first in Quebec, to offer a feminine hygiene program.
Beginning Jan. 1, 2021, citizens (12 years and older) are eligible to receive compensation for the purchase of sustainable feminine hygiene and menstruation products (menstrual cups, washable sanitary napkins and period panties). Citizens are able to claim up to a maximum of $50 per year.
Claims for reimbursement must be made within three months of the date on the receipt. Along with a valid receipt, a proof of residence within the municipality of Cowansville is required.
“Not only is this a beneficial program for women, it is beneficial for the environment too,” said Sylvie Beauregard, mayor of Cowansville.
The program allocated an annual budget of 5,000 dollars.
Some citizens of Cowansville have already expressed their excitement and gratitude for this “modern” program.
“Citizens are happy to benefit from this financial assistance program,” stated Marie-France Beaudry, member of Cowansville’s urban planning advisory committee.
