After three years in the Speaker’s chair, Darryl Plecas is leaving the BC legislature. The former MLA for Abbotsford-South decided not to run for re-election when Premier Horgan called the snap election this fall.
Plecas came to his position as Speaker at a pivotal moment in BC politics. Victorious in his Liberal campaign as an incumbent during the May 2017 provincial election, Plecas sacrificed his tie-forcing vote in the legislature by standing in for the bipartisan role. The move impeded then-premier Christy Clark from appealing to the Lieutenant Governor for approval to form a government over the NDP-Green coalition.
