The Ontario government is investing $893,000 Ed's House Northumberland Hospice Care Centre in Cobourg, which will help increase the number of beds from six to 10.

Northumberland-Peterborough South MPP David Piccini announced Friday morning $283,800 for the six current beds at Community Care Northumberland’s Ed’s House and an additional $609,200 in operational funding for the four new beds. It’s part of a $147.4 million dollar investment from the government over three years for palliative care, he said.

Ed’s House provides end-of-life care at no cost to patients. Community Care Northumberland CEO Trish Baird said the original plan was for a six-bed facility, but a donor provided funding and suggested work be completed during the construction process to enable expansion for more rooms when possible.

"Having them roughed in, they still need work to be done, so none of the furnitures or fixtures...but they're there so it will be a lot less disruption for the people there," Baird said.

Baird added 10 beds an efficient number for hospice centres and Ed's House will add a personal support worker to its staff.
