A film with ties to Six Nations is now being nominated for a Chilliwack Independent Film Festival "Spirit Award" & "Best Cinematography" and will also screen this November 18th at the Chilliwack Independent Film Festival. It was screened at the 2 Ro Media Festival at Six Nations on October 22, 2023.
The film, called "Little Deer", is based on several stories from residential school survivors and was filmed at the Mohawk Institute Residential School.
CKRZ News journalist Deya Miller sat down with Indigenous film director Jon Elliot of Six Nations where they spoke about the process of making the film.
Elliott spoke about how a project like Little Deer did have some hurdles to overcome when it came to funding the project by saying he knew how other films have done it in the past. When it comes to residential school films, he explained, it's always "trauma-porn" -- about the horrifying things that happened to survivors.
Elliot explained that he wanted to show a different approach as these are real stories, real people and much more than just "pain, pain, pain".
