Six Nations Elected Council (SNEC) have encouraged its Consultation and Accommodation Process (CAP) team to put a strong focus on building developments within the City of Brantford and to seek consultation on different projects due to Six Nations' land rights.

Council brought their concerns forward during the Sept. 25 Political Liaison meeting. Those concerns included not having access to the city's development plan, construction currently being done to the Brantford and District Civic Centre, and a proposed redevelopment of the Freshco Plaza at 50 Market St. S. in downtown Brantford.

Coun. Sherri Lyn Hill-Pierce says she would like to see the CAP team focusing in on Brantford and Brant County and all of their different projects in development right now.

"There's a lot of development happening and it just makes me question how much consultation do we know about at this table," she said.

Coun. Audrey Powless Bomberry agreed with Hill-Pierce and says Six Nations has a right to be accommodated due to it's land rights.

"We should be having engagement and accommodation's for all this stuff," Powless Bomberry said. "We deserve part of that because it's on our land."

Six Nations CAP team says they are in touch with the City of Brantford, but says they city can only bring forth information on projects that the city is directly involved in, and that many of the projects being developed in Brantford involve other proponents or organizations.

Peter Graham, CAP team member, says that discussions have began with the City of Brantford on the Proposed redevelopment at 50 Market St. S. last week. Additionally, he says that the CAP has reached out to the city in regards to the arena construction but says the City of Brantford see the work being done as renovations, and so is not obligated to consult with Six Nations.

SNEC is looking for a meeting to be scheduled to include SNEC, Six Nations CAP team and the City of Brantford. Council also added that a similar process will be made with its other neighboring communities.
