Members of the Lennox & Addington Historical Society voted at their annual general meeting this week to close the society effective immediately. It has been operating since 1907.
At the meeting, members regretfully made the decision based on not being able to fulfil the mandate any longer.
For over a century, the society prided itself in nurturing interest in the county's heritage. It will leave a legacy of restoration at the Allan Macpherson House, a pre-confederation house from 1826. The house, the park, and all the documentation including pictures and artifacts were acquired by Lennox & Addington county in 2014.
At the July 10 Loyalist Township council meeting, Coun. Carol Parks noted her feelings on the society closing.
"It's a shame that this historical society is now shutting down after this many years of operation," said Parks.
Mayor Jim Hegadorn spoke on the implications of the society closing.
"My thought on it, from being at the county as well, is it really will not have any impact on our heritage committee or the work that they do for the township," said the mayor.
Duties taken on by the society will be passed on and distributed among the numerous local heritage groups within the county. These include:
- The Adolphustown-Fredericksburgh Heritage Society
- The Cloyne District Historical Society
- Loyalist and Napanee Township Heritage Committees
Museums in the area will also be helping with the transition, including:
- The Museum and Archives of Lennox & Addington and Macpherson House in Napanee
- Cloyne Pioneer Museum and Archives
- The Neilson Store Museum on Amherst island
- The Bath Museum
- Fairfield House and the Fairfield-Gutzeit House
- The Babcock Mill in Odessa
- United Empire Loyalist Park and Museum
- The Old Hay Bay Church
- St. Albans Church in Adolphustown
