Prince Edward County is looking to the community to help raise $10-million to fix one of the area's roads.
On Tuesday, Council approved the creation of the County Road 49 Community Benefit Fund in order to fund a third of its projected $30 million price tag.
The fund will allow for individuals and businesses to donate towards the reconstruction of the 18.6 kilometre high-traffic volume road. Originally built in 1965, the road regularly features in CAA’s annual Ontario Top 10 Worst Roads.
The hoped-for $10 million dollars will be used as leverage to secure funding from the Ontario and federal governments for the remainder of reconstruction funding.
Hillier Coun. Chris Braney, who is a member of the County Road 49 Working Group, said that there is still lots of work to be done, but the future is hopeful:
The county will be issuing tax receipts for each donation made.
