Long overdue redevelopment at the Six Nations long term care facility Iroquois Lodge has completed a tendering process for a design but no money for construction.

The Six Nations Elected Council reviewed information at its General Council meeting on June 5th regarding a contract to cover the costs associated with the design and administration overseeing the redevelopment of the Lodge for a cost of $1,883,000.00 with an additional contingency fee of $188,300.00

Funds to cover the design would come from deferred funds not used in previous years, which raised eyebrows of some councilors who said the money could be spent on other medical needs such as the dental facility which lacks proper X-ray rooms.

In addition, the money for the design does not cover any construction costs, which led to more questions and discussion about where that money could come from, or how to raise the money needed.

Six Nations Family and Community Care Portfolio Lead Janet Gasparelli said that the government will only cover, "the bare bones" and would only pay after the work is completed so significant funds would need to be found to cover any costs. She also pointed out that no local architectural firms had applied for the contract, but that the successful firm HDR Architecture and Associates had involved Six Nations Two Row Architects.
