RCMP leadership are reviewing the Gitxsan Huwilp Government (GHG) proposed armistice agreement, according to the GHG.

The proposal is meant to limit the activity of the RCMP's Community Industry Response Group (C-IRG) which was designed to provide strategic oversight to address energy industry incidents and related public order.

However, the C-IRG has been accused of excessive force, racism, harassment, and rights violations by land defender groups and activists, and is currently under investigation by the Civilian Review and Complaints Commission, following more than 100 complaints.

Last month, the Gitxsan Hereditary Chiefs banned the unit from their territory, though the RCMP refused to comply with the order.

Currently, the RCMP and GHG continue to work on a Community Safety Playbook for land issues. That plan came following an agreement between the two to prevent escalating incidents at blockades.

Presented on April 25, the proposed military armistice draft agreement limits the number of RCMP officers allowed on Gitxsan territory to nine officers.

"As these discussions are ongoing, and out of respect for all stakeholders, it would be inappropriate for the RCMP to comment at this time," the RCMP stated in a written response to CFNR.
