Six Nations Elected Council (SNEC) announced May 1 that the annual Bread and Cheese Day celebrations will shift back to it’s regular routine after dealing with COVID-19 restrictions in recent years.

Bread and Cheese Day celebrations, typically held on the May long weekend, have had some minor setbacks in recent years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since 2020, SNEC delivered bread and cheese to community members and set up community drive through events for the food to be distributed. The event will shift back to normal operations with pandemic restrictions easing and with community members gathering together for the celebration. Community members will also be welcome to watch both the Six Nations Junior 'A'  Arrows Lacrosse Club and the Six Nations Chiefs in action on May 22.

Funding for the event will total $78,722.47 which will come from the Ottawa Trust Fund. Council approved the funds with $72,322.47 of the funds to go directly into purchasing bread and cheese for the event. The addition $6,400.00 will be allocated into the Economic Development Trust.

Chief Mark Hill spoke on bringing the event back now the COVID-19 restrictions have been eased.

"We've had a lot of challenges when it comes to Bread and Cheese, but one thing that I am proud of is we've never ever cancelled it. It's such a great tradition within our community," Hill said. "We've had to modify it in multiple years from delivering it to homes, to drive throughs. You name it we've done it, so we've definitely had our challenges and definitely appreciate all the volunteers that come and assist."

Six Nations Bread and Cheese Day celebrations will take place Monday, May 22.
