On Oct 1, Minister Chagger released a formal statement celebrating the beginning of Canadian Islamic History Month. This year’s theme is resilience and Achievement of Black Muslims
In regards to the choice of theme, Chagger said that it “provides us an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the significant ways the Black Muslim communities and Muslim Canadians have helped make Canada stronger and more resilient.”
She reinforced her stance against islamophobia and noted that the theme provides the opportunity to address the connections between anti-Black racism and prejudice against Muslims. A relevant topic considering the number of Black Lives Matter protests that occurred over the course of the summer.
