On Feb. 14, a Valentines’ Memorial Walk will take place in support of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two Spirit (MMIWGMB2S+) people on Six Nations.
Amber Silversmith is the “Our Love Starts With Us” Counsellor with Ganohkwasra Family Assault Support Services, a counsellor that offers one-on-one sessions to those seeking support for MMIWGMB2S+ family members and community members. Silversmith is overseeing the memorial walk and says once participants get to Veteran’s Park, she will be revealing statistics on Six Nations murders never presented before (from 1956 to the present).
The Six Nations Police, who are partnering on this event, will also have a presentation, but Silversmith is keeping it a surprise because she wants people to come and see it.
Chiefwood Road will be closed to traffic for their walk with the Six Nations Police blocking it from Ganohkwasra to Veterans’ Park starting just before noon.
Organizers are asking people to wear, red, rainbow or ribbon shirts and say everyone is welcome.
The rain or shine event is scheduled from 12-1 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 14.
