Haldimand County resident charged in connection with fatal hit and run

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have arrested and charged a 39-year-old Haldimand County individual in connection to Tuesday's fatal hit and run.

The hit and run took place just before 5 a.m. on Jan. 3 on Indian Line near Concession 2 of Townsend. Initially, OPP asked the public for assistance in locating a white Volkswagen Atlas SUV.

OPP Acting Sgt. Ed Sanchuk said members of the Norfolk County OPP detachment, OPP crime unit and the Haldimand Norfolk Coumminty Street Crime Unit executed a search warrant at a David Street, Haldimand County address. Investigators took the accused individual into custody and seized a vehicle.

Jermaine O'Raine Syblis has been charged with failing to stop at accident resulting in death under the Criminal Code. Syblis was held in custody and is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice located in Simcoe today.

Sanchuk thanked the public for it's assistance in the investigation, saying, "we're hoping that this does give a little bit of resolution to the family."

He also stated that the investigation is still ongoing and if anyone has information surrounding this particular incident is being urged to contact investigators at 1-888-310-1122 or call Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
