Affordability in the West Kootenays recently caught the attention of the Globe and Mail.

Rossland-based staff writer Salmaan Farooqui reported on the migration from some communities into Salmo, which despite its small size of a 1,000 residents, has become a haven for residents looking to flee rising living costs and in search of affordable housing.

"In a larger city, people are always talking about getting shifted out into the further stretches of Toronto or and then getting moved into suburban areas," Farooqui said. "There just really hadn't been any reporting on that same phenomenon taking place in smaller regions as well, and I was pretty fascinated to hear anecdotally how many people were moving to Salmo."

He said despite hearing from people who could afford a condo in places like Nelson, they saw their money stretching further in a place like Salmo.
