Construction on a five-unit townhome on Harold Road in Ohsweken will begin this month, according to Six Nations Elected Council and the Six Nations Housing Department.
The Six Nations Housing Department received just over $1.5 million October 2022 to go towards the construction, which is in partnership with the Hamilton and Heartland Habitat for Humanity branches.
Six Nations Economic Development Trust contributed around $1 million of the total cost, with an additional $500,000 in funding coming from Housing’s 2020/2021 Indigenous Services Canada Enhanced funding allocation.
The initial cost of the project was significantly decreased due to Habitat for Humanity’s involvement, according to council.
In a press release dated November 8th, Six Nations Elected Council Chief Mark Hill said he is pleased to see the community agencies working together for the betterment of Six Nations and “the generosity of the Economic Development Trust and the involvement of Habitat for Humanity strengthens our ability to provide safe, affordable housing so our people can continue to live in their home community.”
Work on the project is expected to be completed by summer 2023.
