Citizens across Canada are sending trauma medical supplies to Ukraine's frontlines and Smithers is helping the effort.
Scott Clydesdale—an avid walker (along with his trusted Akbash Riley) who use the trails of the Bulkley Valley daily—spear-headed a local fundraiser after he was inspired by the work that Dave Bryenton, an Edmonton man, is doing to deliver supplies to citizens and fighters in the Ukraine.
Bryenton has made six journeys to the Ukraine personally to deliver bags of medical supplies along with helmets, boots and coats.
“Trail time for Ukraine” is the local fundraiser created by Clydesdale, which asks hikers and bikers to donate and/or collect pledges for their outings. Clydesdale got the idea back in Ontario when he helped raise money for therapy dogs by asking people to sponsor their walks on the trails of Lake Huron.
Clydesdale said that he felt the need to get involved when he read about Bryenton's work. The need for trauma medical supplies along with the Ukranian-Canadian diaspora spoke to him, and he had to do something.
"I'm thinking about all of the young men and women who have to continue with their lives after the war, and this is [the money raised for supplies] a way to help them after surgery or amputation."
A Donations Account #17178228 has been opened at the BV Credit Union, and donations can be remitted by envelope there or by e-transfer to ukrainemedicalaid@citywest.ca.
