Local artists are showcasing their talents this summer thanks to various art projects being planned between Terrace and Kitimat.
With a variety of murals being installed by the Skeena Salmon Art Festival Society, Kermode Tourism has started a tour walk, where attendees will be shown artwork around the town.
If walking outside isn’t something you’re interested in, the society is also opening the new Skeena Salmon Art Show.
Between July 29 and Aug. 31, spectators have the chance to see artwork from up to 96 artists at the Terrace Art Gallery, before the show moves to the Nisga’a Museum on Sept. 3. A total of 96 artists are involved in the art show, with 35 of those artists being indigenous.
It has been important to the festival society in the past to represent the beauty of indigenous art as well as the cultural importance of the natural resources around us.
Hlox Majagalee is a Gitxsan artist who is contributing to the art show for a second time.
Majagalee’s piece displays the ecosystem that surrounds the salmon which represent the five elements: “The mothers of the ecosystems” is how the artist describes it.
Demonstrating the natural environment in the northwest is a popular theme this summer.
With $20,000 in funding from the District of Kitimat, the Kitimat Public Art alliance has at least 12 murals planned for the future, with the first having the concept of “Our natural environment.”
Out of four artists, voters chose a design by Prince Rupert-based Chris Fraser, with their design of three orcas being representative of community togetherness.
