Stephanie Anderson is from the Laksilyu “Small frog” clan, Kwen Beegh Yex “House beside the fire” of the Wet’suwet’en nation. She is a painter, muralist, carver and graduate of the Freda Diesing Art School at Coast Mountain College.
Her work has been featured in the Museum of Vancouver, Coast Mountain College, on the walls of the Terrace Airport, and most recently in the Smithers Art Galley show called Northern Indigenous Perspectives as well as the upcoming Skeena Salmon Art Show, a travelling exhibit throughout British Columbia's northwest.
Her talents are being recognized regionally and across Canada, and her carving Wolf and Moon placed second in a Canada-wide art competition called Indigenous Arts and Stories.
Her latest personal challenge was to guest curate an exhibit of northern Indigenous art for the Smithers Art Gallery. The show features art pieces (including paintings, carvings, beadwork, jewelry, and installations) from many nations across northern BC.
This exhibition explores the unique character of each individual artist, inspired by and respectful of tradition, and represents their interpretation of that tradition. Visitors, both in person and online, will enjoy some of the diversity of indigenous art, giving voice to those who may not have been heard otherwise.
"This exhibition represents our [northern indigenous artists'] heritage and lineage as indigenous people, but also represents our future."
The show features 14 artists work and opened on Friday, July 15th at the Smithers Art Gallery.
