Toronto Centre MP Marci Ien was appointed as the minister of Women and Gender Equality during Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s cabinet reshuffle this week.
Ien is one six new women entering the cabinet following the 2021 federal election in September.
She held her seat in Toronto during the election, gaining 52 per cent of the vote in the traditional Liberal stronghold.
The seat was initially won by Ien in a 2020 byelection, which was triggered after the resignation of former finance minister Bill Morneau.
She defeated former Green Party leader Annamie Paul in a close race in the byelection, before gaining the majority of the votes in the federal election.
The former CTV journalist is a long time resident of Toronto Centre , and she and her family continue to live in the St. Jamestown area.
Part of Ien’s responsibilities as minister includes the youth portfolio, which she picked up from MP Bardash Chagger, who was not included in the new cabinet after the reshuffle.
Ien is one of nine new MPs in Trudeau’s cabinet moving forward.
Prior to her decision to enter politics, Ien co-hosted the CTV show, The Social in Toronto.
