The Wet’suwet’en’s fight against the Coastal GasLink project got a celebrity boots today, after 65 actors, musicians and other Hollywood celebrities lent their voice to support the Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chiefs.
In an online presentation Chief Na’Moks of the Wet’suwet’en Nation, Molly Wickham, spokesperson for the Gitdumden Checkpoint were joined by Hollywood actor Mark Ruffalo who said he and others plan to pull their money from City National Bank, also know as the Bank of Stars, a subsidiary of the Royal Bank of Canada, if the the bank doesn’t divest from the Coastal GasLink project and fossil fuels all together.
“People believe that this is a done deal and Indigenous people support it, the majority of our people don’t,” said Chief Na’Moks.
“When this all started the response was huge and it’s going to get even bigger.”
The No More Dirty Banks campaign is ramping up support and calling on several banks to divest from fossil fuel projects, especially those they believe infringe on Indigenous lands and rights.
RBC will be hosting their annual general meeting in April where shareholders will vote whether to divest from the project or continue to support them.
